Professional Communication Organizations

There are a wide variety of organizations available to Communication Professionals. With the advancement in technological opportunities, the access and information on these organizations are readily available.

National Communication Association:
This organization was founded in 1914 and boasts over 8,000 members including scholars, educators, students, and professionals. "The National Communication Association advances communication as the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media and consequences of communication through humanistic, social scientific and aesthetic inquiry" (natcom.org, n.d.). They have been holding an annual conference for the past 98 years. This seems like a very reputable organization and would be an asset to anyones resume who becomes a member. Their website is home to tons of information on research, publications, career opportunities and networking opportunities.

The Association for Women in Communications:
This association recognizes the complex relationships that exist across communications disciplines. Members include people from all aspects of communications including students, educators and professionals. You can become a member of this association for a reasonable fee that grants you access to publications on communication, networking opportunities, events, and career openings. This is an organization I would love to become a part of one day.

International Communication Association:
This is an "academic association for scholars interested in the study, teaching, and application of all aspects of human and mediated communication" (icahdq.org, n.d.).  I like all of the benefits included in being a member of this reputable organization. Membership includes access to thousands of publications, networking opportunities, discounts on books, access to journal subscriptions related to the communications field, and even travel grants to attend conferences.

The American Communication Association:
Although this organization is based out of the United States, it is completely virtual which is neat. They are "committed to enabling the effective use of new and evolving technologies to facilitate communication instruction, research and criticism, and to offering a technologically supportive venue for all who study the ways in which humans communicate" (americancomm.org, n.d.). Here's what's cool about this association...it's completely free! All you have to do is sign up and you become a member in which you can network with other people associated in the communications field.

Association for Business Communication:
"The Association for Business Communication (ABC) is an international, interdisciplinary organization committed to advancing business communication research, education, and practice" (businesscommunication.org, n.d.). I like this organization because it caters to a specific interest group in communications. Much like the rest of the organizations discussed, membership to this organization offers many benefits, with the most beneficial being networking opportunities.
